Home Remedies for Common Colds


Common cold is a common viral illness. It causes symptoms such as headache, fever, nasal congestion, running nose, sneezing and even body weakness. In some cases, common cold may be the onset of more serious illnesses such as pneumonia, asthma, tonsillitis or rhinitis. Since common cold is viral, antibiotics cannot cure it. However, there are home remedies that can help alleviate the symptoms of the same.

The first home remedy is the use of chicken and vegetable soup. Taking chicken and vegetable soup hot can help ease symptoms such as nasal congestion. However, there are no known ingredients that ease symptoms. Therefore, for the soup to be effective it has to be taken hot.

Ginger also serves as a good home remedy for common colds. To prepare ginger, boil water with ginger. Drinking this water helps soothe sore throat, which is often a symptom of common cold, as well as reduce coughs and nausea.

The third way to remedy common cold at home is through use of lemon and honey. Taking lemon and honey especially before bed helps alleviate symptoms by morning. This remedy is especially useful on children, since it also reduces the occurrence of coughs.

The fourth and most effective remedy if garlic. Garlic has cold soothing properties and more so, an ingredient called allicin that helps stop the flow of the fluid that encourages the spread of illness through bacteria and viruses. Garlic can be taken raw or cooked for those that dislike its taste.

The last home remedy is the use of salty water. One can gaggle salty water to clear sore throats. In other cases, one can rinse their nostrils with warm and cooled salty water to ease nasal congestion. It is important to note that when using salty water, the water needs to be boiled first. Using tap water directly may introduce bacteria that may travel up the brain and cause deadly diseases.
